Reply:Assuming you mean Melbourne in Australia and not the USA (though it probably doesn't make any difference) they are the same as everywhere else. One pub will be full of pretentious pretty boys, being too good for anybody (The Exhange). Another pub will be full of leatherette queens (Laird O'Cockpen) more interested in playing pool. Then another would be... well it's all the same around the world... just the names of the pubs are different! Just go to Commercial Road in Prahran if you want pretentious and north to Gipps Street, Collingwood if you want leather/grunge. Good luck, I endured it for 15 years in Melbourne, previously 2 years in Sydney and the previous 20 years in London. Now I have "retired" to the coast I can look back but can't see any differences!
